On Sunday, July 25, the ESDES students went on their last outing of the summer program to the water park, Aquarama. Many went on water slide rides like the Black Hole, Dune Surf, Kamikazes, and Twin Twister. Others relaxed in the wave pool or The Lakes. A few brave students tried the Space Shot, a ride that shoots its passengers 60 meters into the air in only 2 seconds, before lowering them back to earth. It was a great final trip before exams begin.

Final Week of Classes

The ESDES summer students had a very busy final week of classes. On Tuesday, July 20, they attended a Flamenco show at Radio City in Valencia. On Wednesday night, the monitors threw a party for them on the roof of the boy’s dorm. The students enjoyed the famous Spanish paella for supper on Thursday evening. Their final Friday night vespers was a beautiful outdoor concert with the members of the church, where they had the opportunity to lift up their voices in praise to the Lord. Saturday night was the talent show. Students and monitors performed songs, dances and skits for each others entertainment. The monitors presented a slideshow of the students’ experiences during the past six weeks and presented them with a heart-shaped memento of their time here in Spain.

Peñíscola

On Sunday, July 18, the ESDES students visited the beautiful costal city of Peñíscola. During the fifteenth century, the castle in the old, walled portion of the city was home to Pope Benedict XIII, known as Papa Luna. After checking out the castle and learning some of its history, the students spent the afternoon on the beautiful beach, swimming, sunbathing, eating ice cream, and just enjoying the day.

Castilla Tour

As is the yearly tradition in ESDES, the summer students enjoyed five days, starting on the 5th of July, in the center of Spain. They had the opportunity to visit many of the most famous monuments and sites of the country in the cities of Madrid, Segovia, and Toledo. Some of most memorable moments were the tours through the streets of Madrid, the visit to the Prado Museum and the Royal Palace, the Alcázar, the Aqueduct of Segovia, the Sefardí Museum and the Toledo Cathedral. Moreover, their visit coincided with the World Cup, and they were able to celebrate Spain’s triumph in the semi-final in the center of Madrid: the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. It was a gratifying experience that, above all, united the students and created many strong bonds amongst them.

Valencia!

All day Thursday, July 1, was spent touring Valencia, seeing historical sights, and taking advantage of rebajas, the sales in stores throughout the month of July. The ESDES students first went on a driving tour of the city, passing by some of the famous spots, including the City of Arts and Sciences with its huge aquarium, IMAX theater, and other attractions. Then they went on a walking tour through the old part of the city, where their stops included a cathedral and indoor marketplace. In the afternoon, the students were free to visit wherever they wanted in groups. Some went shopping, while others went on their own walking tours of the city. Overall, it was a fun day for everyone.

Vall d’Uixó

On Sunday afternoon, June 27, the students of ESDES visited the longest navigable underground river in Europe that runs through the caves of San José in nearby Vall d’Uixó. The students enjoyed a boat tour of the caves, and a short walking tour, where they got to see up close the stalagmite and stalactite formations.

A Night at the Beach

Wednesday night, June 23, the ESDES students went to the beach in Canet to experience the Night of San Juan, the shortest night of the year. The beach was crowded with people sitting around bonfires, waiting for midnight to jump the waves and bonfires, as is the custom. Students enjoyed delicious Italian ice cream and a night-time swim, as well as getting to know each other and the youth from the church around the bonfire.

Sagunto Tour

On Wednesday, June 23, the ESDES students had their first field trip, where they explored the old historic part of Sagunto. They visited the Roman theatre on the mountainside and climbed up to the ruins of the old fortress of Sagunto, where the city stood in medieval times. Afterwards, they got to experience shopping in the open-air market, where they found everything from souvenirs to fruits and vegetables.

On Sunday, June 20, the ESDES students went on a picnic on the beach. They enjoyed volleyball, American football and other sports, as well as sunbathing and swimming.
